About Sarah

As a mother of three young children, I have a vested interest in the future of our community.  As a scientist and environmentalist, I am also poignantly aware of how critical issues such as water quality on Long Island are.  In lieu of many of the poor policy decisions being made, I have decided that it was time I stood up and took action.  Brookhaven Town is my home.  It is where my three children were born and where I am raising them.  I will strive to give them a future that I, and the rest of the community, can be proud of.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, moving to Long Island for school, ultimately receiving a Masters of Science from Stony Brook University in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences.  After a brief stint home, where I met my husband, I have been living in Brookhaven Town for the past 11 years.  I worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for seven years.  I have spent the past four years working with the local governments in the Manhasset Bay watershed as the Executive Director of the Manhasset Bay Protection Committee.  I use my training as a marine biologist to make educated decisions that directly affect Manhasset Bay.  Having both a scientific and government background makes me uniquely qualified for an elected position as I am a critical thinker and have worked in the system.

I have been active in politics for the last few years, serving as a Brookhaven Town Democratic Committee member for the last two.  I am also a member of the Suffolk County Mother's of Twins Club, the Coram Civic Association, Mommy and Me, and Science Advocacy of Long Island.  My husband and I host a group that is networked with The Indivisible Guide.  I have been a registered Democrat for 15 years, but an independent thinker for 20.

Sarah has received the endorsement of Run For Something, a national organization aimed at recruiting and supporting diverse progressives for down-ballot races to build a bench for the future . They aim to lower the barriers to entry for these candidates by helping them with seed money, organization building, and access to training.  The endorsement process includes an extensive internal review with background check, staff interview and insight from local state experts.  Being recognized as an RFS candidate (only 38 nationally at a time) shows that Deonarine has great momentum and is running a solid, community-led campaign.

Sarah has also received the endorsement of Eleanor's Legacy.  Eleanor's Legacy is an organization that recruits, trains and funds progressive women throughout NY at the state and local levels.
